The Fed Cup clash between Australia and the US was left hanging in the balance following a meltdown by Daria Gavrilova.
America’s Danielle Collins defeated Australia’s Gavrilova 6-1 3-6 6-2 to even the world group first round tie 2-2 heading into the doubles in Asheville, North Carolina on Sunday.
Gavrilova, who has been in poor form all year, wasn’t used in the first set of singles matches but was put in after Ash Barty defeated America’s Madison Keys to put the Aussies up 2-1.
After losing to Collins, Dasha reacted in anger, smashing her racquet as Fed Cup coach Nicole Pratt and captain Alicia Molik tried to calm her down.
Gavrilova was then set to feature in the doubles but was replaced by youngster Priscilla Hon following her outburst.
However Barty and Hon were victorious, 6-4 7-5, sending Australia through to the World Group semi-finals against Belarus.
Barty overcame a shaky start to steamroll Keys 6-4 6-1. The world No.13 lost her first two service games to trail 0-3 in the first set, but was able to grind her way back and dominate 17th ranked Keys.
