An emotional Andy Murray has broken down at a press conference on the eve of the Australian Open, saying he wants to retire at Wimbledon this year but may not make it that far.

Asked how he was feeling after a practice match with Novak Djokovic on Thursday, Murray said “not great” before excusing himself and leaving the room in tears.

The three time grand slam winner eventually returned to confirm he plans on retiring this year due to chronic hip pain.

The popular Scot — who has sank to No. 240 in the world after undergoing hip surgery last year — was immediately flooded with messages of support.

“},{“contentType”:”HTML”,”html”:”

One player who has known Murray since they were both children, Novak Djokovic, was taken aback when the news was broken to him at a sponsor’s event in Melbourne.

“},{“contentType”:”HTML”,”html”:”

The 14-time Grand Slam champion paid tribute to Murray as a great rival who pushed him to succeed due to the Scot’s sheer force of competitiveness.

“},{“contentType”:”HTML”,”html”:”

“It’s quite a shocker for me because we’re the same age, the same generation,” Djokovic said.

“},{“contentType”:”HTML”,”html”:”

“It’s kind of sad to see him going through what he has been going through the last couple of years with his injuries.

“},{“contentType”:”HTML”,”html”:”

“As someone who has gone through a major injury with my elbow the last couple of years, I can definitely empathise with him and relate to what he’s going through. Obviously, the extent of his injuries are even worse than mine — hips and he had a back surgery and so forth.

“},{“contentType”:”VIDEO”,”marbleApiEnv”:”prod”,”playerType”:”player”,”videoId”:714012},{“contentType”:”HTML”,”html”:”

“I trained with him, practiced with him a couple of days ago and got to chat a little bit. He’s a great champion. He’s a friend of mine who I grew up with since we were 11, 12 years old.

“},{“contentType”:”HTML”,”html”:”

“We know each other, we’ve been rivals, we’ve played some epic matches all over the world.

“},{“contentType”:”HTML”,”html”:”

“It’s kind of sad to know he might play his last Australian Open, but I do wish him all the best. I know he’s the father of two children, so there’s a lot of things in life to be grateful for.”

“},{“contentType”:”HTML”,”html”:”

Juan Martin del Potro withdrew from this year’s Australian Open because of injury, but was left devastated after watching Murray’s emotional press conference.

“},{“contentType”:”HTML”,”html”:”

“Please don’t stop trying,” del Potro said.

“},{“contentType”:”HTML”,”html”:”

“I can imagine your pain and sadness. I hope you can overcome this.

“},{“contentType”:”HTML”,”html”:”

“You deserve to retire on your own terms, whenever that happens.

Andy Roddick also suggested Murray could bow out of tennis by partnering up with his brother, Jamie, at Wimbledon.

Andy, I know you take me for a joker most of the time, but at least hear me out on this one old friend. You will always be someone that impacted the sport in so many different ways, I know this was never the way you wanted to go out, but hey it was a heck of a ride. You took me under your wing as soon as I got on tour, and to this day you have been someone I literally just look forward to seeing. You are one crazy tennis player, miles better than me, but I just want you to know that today isn’t only a sad day for you and your team, it’s a sad day for the sport and for everyone you’ve had an impact on. Which leaves me big fella.. these are a couple photos, that should make you smile and think, I was actually a little bit of a younger brother to you. Anyways, I just want you to know, and I’m sure you already do, everyone wants you to keep fighting and to keep being you. Goodluck at the Australian Open muzz, I’ll be behind you. #onelastdance 🙌🏽🙏🏽
