Cycling lovers can test their skills in a whole new way at this year’s City of Adelaide Tour Village when an Australian-first comes to Victoria Square.
For the first time on our shores, the StreetVelodrome will be a major drawcard in the heart of the CBD.
The unique “pop-up” banked velodrome offers visitors the chance to ride the banking in thrilling Olympic-style track pursuit races.
And it is being touted as both for seasoned riders with all the skills, or first-timers, based on what series director Carl Thompson has seen in the UK and Ireland.
“After five years of running the StreetVelodrome Series across the UK and Ireland, we’ve managed to offer thousands of people the chance to go racing, many for the first time and it is now Australia’s turn,” he said.
Tourism, Trade and Investment Minister David Ridgway said the StreetVelodrome would be the main attraction for tens of thousands of cycling fans visiting Victoria Square when the Santos Tour Down Under is in town.
“With all the necessary equipment including helmets and bikes provided, along with expert individual coaching, this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for cycling fans to ride on a velodrome-style track,” he said.
The StreetVelodrome will be at the Tour Village from January 14-20. But it won’t be the only attraction at the Village.
Also for the first time this year, there will be the Bikesportz Recovery Zone, which will be a one-stop shop for cycling enthusiasts.
And there will be a new layout and design for food outlets. The central hub will be one of the hottest places to be when the TDU circus arrives in Adelaide.
The village will run from January 12-20, opening on most days from 6am and closing at 10pm.
It will form a key part of the Santos Festival of Cycling where, once again, cycling lovers can mix it with current and former professional stars of the sport and kick off the Tour in style with a free concert featuring Client Liaison.
