AUSTRALIAN UFC middleweight champion Robert Whittaker has withdrawn from his title defence against Luke Rockhold at UFC 221 next month due to an unspecified injury.

ESPN broke the story on Saturday night and reported that Yoel Romero (12-2) will instead fight Rockhold (16-3) for an interim 185-pound belt in Perth on February 11.

UFC officials told ESPN that Whittaker would then face the winner in a unification bout.

I would like to apologize to all my supporters and fans of MMA for not being able to put on the show you deserve. I’ve been ruled medically unable to compete and wont be able to defend on home soil. This card meant so much to me and I’m devastated for not being able to fight. All I can do is focus on getting healthy to come back better than ever. All the best to Yoel and Luke for their fight and ill be waiting…

“I’m beyond disappointed that I’m unable to defend the title in my home country of Australia,” Whittaker said. “I hope the fans enjoy what should be a great night of fights at UFC 221 and I look forward to a recovery as soon as possible that will have me back in the Octagon to face the winner of the main event.”

“},{“contentType”:”HTML”,”html”:”

Whittaker, Australia’s only UFC champion, was an obvious choice to headline an event that could be considered close to the worst PPV card in UFC history due its thin overall standard.

The 33-year-old Rockhold is looking to ecapture a UFC title after he surrendered the 185-pound belt in his first defence to Michael Bisping. He is coming off a TKO win over David Branch in September.

“},{“contentType”:”HTML”,”html”:”

Romero, a former Cuban Olympic silver medallist wrestler, had been scheduled to fight Branch at a UFC Fight Night event on February 24. His last fight was a decision loss to Whittaker for the interim title last July.

“},{“contentType”:”HTML”,”html”:”

Prior to that loss, Romero had won eight in a row, including six by knockout. Those wins included victories over Chris Weidman, Ronaldo Souza and Lyoto Machida.

The middleweight division has been somewhat convoluted during the past few months.

“},{“contentType”:”HTML”,”html”:”

An interim title was created for Whittaker and Romero, which the Australian won. Georges St-Pierre submitted Bisping to take the actual title but he then vacated in December, thus promoting Whittaker to undisputed status. He’s now injured and another interim title has been created, with the winner of Rockhold-Romero to fight Whittaker next once he’s fit again.

The fight world was in belief after witnessing an “insane” ending to the bantamweight bout between Ricky Simon and Merab Dvalishvili on the undercard.

“},{“contentType”:”HTML”,”html”:”

Making his UFC debut, Simon was awarded a TKO win but the events that led to that decision left fellow fighters and fans gobsmacked.

“},{“contentType”:”HTML”,”html”:”

An engrossing bout reached its crescendo late in the third round when Simon turned the tables on a takedown attempt by swivelling over and assuming top position as he looked to submit Dvalishvili with a guillotine choke in the final minute.

“},{“contentType”:”HTML”,”html”:”

Referee Liam Kerrigan went in for a closer look as commentators speculated Dvalishvili was about to be choked out.

“},{“contentType”:”HTML”,”html”:”

But the Georgian defied all logic by ripping his arms away from the ref and continually moving his legs as he aimed to prove he was still in the contest and avoid having the fight called off.

“},{“contentType”:”HTML”,”html”:”

“He’s still trying to fight,” one commentator said.

“},{“contentType”:”HTML”,”html”:”

“What is going on there?” another added.

“},{“contentType”:”HTML”,”html”:”

Nobody thought Dvalishvili could hold on, but he looked to be doing just that, even giving a thumbs up with 20 seconds remaining.

“},{“contentType”:”HTML”,”html”:”

How the 27-year-old was surviving was anyone’s guess. As the buzzer went to signal the end of the clash, the referee put his hands on Simon’s back and the American quickly jumped off his exhausted foe, who looked like he had passed out at the very last second.

“,”scriptToLoad”:”“},{“contentType”:”HTML”,”html”:”

There was a lengthy delay as officials deliberated whether the judges’ decision would need to decide the winner or whether Dvalishvili had succumbed.

“},{“contentType”:”HTML”,”html”:”

In the end, Kerrigan awarded Simon the fight via TKO at the 5:00 mark of the final round, ruling Dvalishvili was unconscious at the end.

“},{“contentType”:”HTML”,”html”:”

The fight made history as the latest ever finish in a three-round UFC bout.

“},{“contentType”:”HTML”,”html”:”

“A little controversial,” Simon said. “I got up, I looked in his eyes, and he was gone. He was out.”

“},{“contentType”:”HTML”,”html”:”

Social media went into meltdown as everyone reacted to the crazy scenes.

“},{“contentType”:”HTML”,”html”:”

UFC star and former Invicta FC champion Angela Hill wrote on Twitter: “Holy s*** what was that?!” while fellow MMA fighter Jared Gordon was equally stunned.

“},{“contentType”:”HTML”,”html”:”

“Holy s*** I’ve never seen anything like that,” he wrote on Twitter.
